As a part of our semester topic in 2021 we focused on waste management at
Die Angewandte. In our waste analysis, we saw that there was an incredible amount of paper towels in the residual waste. Disposing of them in the paper bin makes no sense, not only because they are soiled, but also because of the length of the fibers - the fibers of the paper towels have already gone through several recycling cycles. But how can you still use the material again? Maybe by using organic waste garbage bin made of paper-mâché, which can then be composted together with its contents? We asked at the composting plant Lobau of the MA48, and if it is a pre-collection aid, the paper may also get disposed of in the organic waste.
The project is now at an experimental stage, and we plan to develop it further in the future. Our prototypes now can hold moisture (water) for approximately a week.
